Tomris Uyar was born in Istanbul in 1941. She graduated from Arnavutköy American Girls’ High School and the Istanbul University Economics Faculty’s Journalism Institute. She began her writing career in the 1960s and became known for her short stories. In her works, she delves into the depths of the human soul, exploring women’s inner worlds, their search for identity, and their struggles with societal pressures. She received the Sait Faik Story Award in 1980 for Yürekte Bukağı (The Shackles in the Heart) and in 1987 for Yaza Yolculuk (Journey to Summer). She translated works of authors such as Virginia Woolf, Gabriel García Márquez, Juan Rulfo, Lewis Carroll, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Julio Cortázar, and Jorge Luis Borges into Turkish. Uyar, who holds an important place in Turkish literature, passed away in 2003.
