Çiğdem Kaplangı

Writer and translator Çiğdem (Alkang) Kaplangı was born in Istanbul and spent her childhood in five different countries. She attended primary school in Costa Rica and Ghana for part of her education. After graduating from Robert College, she studied Psychology at Bard College in New York, where she focused on Latin American Literature. At the same college, she took a course on translation techniques from William Weaver, a writer and translator who taught there and translated into English the works of such major authors as Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Primo Levi. She began her career in advertising in New York. After returning to Turkey, her articles and interviews appeared in magazines and newspaper supplements. She worked as a copywriter, wrote lyrics for various advertising campaigns and film soundtracks, translated books, and authored children’s books. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Creative Writing at Edinburgh Napier University. She also works as a creative writing consultant with writers at different levels of experience, accompanying them through the processes of developing plot, character, dialogue, and story in their novels and short stories. From those just beginning to write to experienced writers who have lost their way in a work in progress, she supports writers in developing their ideas and finding the story they want to tell. Çiğdem Kaplangı lives in Edinburgh with her husband and their twins, born in 2010.
