basar_basarir_fotoBaşar Başarır was born in İstanbul in 1970. After a high school where the language of education was German, he went on to a university where the language of education was English. He got his MA in International Communications from City University, London in 1997. Başarır published his first collection of stories while at Boğaziçi University, where he was still working on his Mechanical Engineering degree. With several other short story collections that followed, Başarır secured his position in the Turkish literary scene and went on to receive both of the two most important short story prizes in Turkey (2004 Sait Faik Short Story Prize with Getirin O Günleri Yakalım Bu Öyküleri, and 2014 Yunus Nadi Short Story Prize with Teklifinizle İlgilenmiyorum). He has ten short story collections published by various publishing houses; and his first novel Sibop just came out in January 2017. As a member of a Turkish family with roots in the Greek Islands, Başar Başarır is nowadays working on his next novel about the complicated range of relations between Turkey and Greece, from warm camaraderie to deep conflicts.
